Why washing hands is essential?

Germs accumulate in different places and tools which we use in our day to day life.

  1. Harmful germs and microbes live everywhere from handles, doorknobs, keyboards, mobiles, to cash/coins and ATM machines.
  2. Palms and hands can carry up to 1 crore bacteria and can live up to 3 hours.
  3. Germs can get accumulated under rings, bracelets, watches, and bangles.
  4. On food service spaces like stainless steel plates, glasses, plastic plates, germs can live up to 48 hours.

When should someone wash their hands?

Washing hands for 10 to 15 times daily is necessary to eliminate the germs. Do not forget to wash hands:

  1. After touching or petting an animal
  2. After touching or disposing of garbage.
  3. Before and after cooking food and eating.
  4. After touching or caring for an ill person.
  5. After coughing and sneezing.

How to wash hands effectively:

  1. Washing hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water kill the virus if it is on the hands.
  2. Make sure you wash hands between fingers and nails since germs can be found under nails also.
  3. ‘Hand sanitizers’ will not be able to eliminate all the germs on the hand but it may help in reducing the number of germs.
  4. Always soap with running water is the best way to wash hands than using a sanitizer.
