World Sleep Day: Chennai ranks first among the sleep-deprived cities. What can you do?
World Sleep Day is held the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox of each year. This is celebrated to create awareness among the people around the world on sleep problems and to prevent and manage sleep disorders.
Average human should get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every day. But due to people's hectic work schedules, they tend to work late hours at night which affects their day to day routine since sleep is important.
A recent study says that Indians are sleeping very less than they used to. The sleep hours of people have come down mostly in cities. Most of the people in the main cities of India are sleep deprived. They are not sleeping for the required 8 hours.
The survey also says that Indian youths sleep only for 6.60 hours on weekends and 6.97 hours on weekdays in 2019. This is almost less than one hour when compared to the hours they were sleeping in 2018.
Chennai ranks first among the sleep-deprived cities in India following Chennai, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, and Ahmedabad are in the next positions.

It is said that Human Being is the only mammal that can willingly delay sleep. A person will take at least 10 to 15 minutes to fall asleep but if they sleep as soon as they lay down it means they are sleep deprived.
