Chennai Police beats up the Anti-CAA protesters, act agitates other Islamists of Tamilnadu
Islamists in various parts of Tamil Nadu started protesting in midnight after the police resorted to lathi-charge on the Anti-CAA protesters in Old Washermenpet, Chennai yesterday.
There are ongoing protests throughout the country against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act. This was followed by a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act in Chennai yesterday evening. Following this, the police beat up and indiscriminately attacked the protesters who had gathered at the old Washermenpet area. A few people seem to have been injured in this attack by the police.
120 people were arrested for protesting, the video footage of the incident quickly went viral on social networks. This incident in Chennai caused great fear among the Islamists which is similar to the incident in Delhi where the police attacked the Jamia students who were protesting against CAA.
Muslims started protesting in various parts of Tamil Nadu, condemning the action of the police. Meanwhile, Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan held talks with the Islamic organizations at the Washermenpet Police Station to prevent the situation from intensifying.
Following the smooth agreement, it was announced that the detainees would be released. However, the Islamists protest against the action of the police continued till midnight. Several people protested throughout the night in the Broadway and old Washermenpet area. The protests continue for the 2nd consecutive day today.
