Supreme Court Judge faints during Nibhaya case hearing
Justice R Banumathi fainted in the courtroom today during the 2012 Nirbhaya rape case hearing. The supreme court Justice R Banumathi who was dictating order on the Centre's plea seeking the separate hanging of the convicts fainted during the hearing.
The Judge was taken to one of the chambers of the judges and was given treatment. The bench has adjourned the case and said the order will be released later. The court members said that Justice R Banumathi had a high fever during the hearing and was on medication. They said that she continues to have a severe fever and is examined by doctors.
The Supreme Court dismissed the petition of the convict Vinay Sharma who challenged the rejection of mercy petition by the President. President Ramnath Govind had rejected all the mercy petitions of the convicts so Vinay Kumar filed a petition over it. SC dismissed Vinay's petition today and said that it has no merit.
The four convicts gang-raped a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in the year 2012. The victim had died at a Singapore hospital a few days after the incident. One of the accused, Ram Singh, had committed suicide in jail earlier, another was released since he was a juvenile. The rest four were sentenced to death on January 7, 2019. However, another court suspended the execution.
