Facebook in its annual report said that it has 27.5 crores fake accounts among its 250 crore users. This report was taken as per monthly active users on Facebook until December 31, 2019.

The networking site said that there is an 8% increase in users when compared to December 31, 2018.

The report said that the duplicate accounts are high in developing markets like the Philippines and Vietnam. Facebook said that a duplicate account is another account maintained by the user in addition to his primary account. Most of the users have created another account for business organizations and their pets. These accounts violate the FB terms of service and are considered spam.

The reports also explained that duplicate and false accounts are based on an internal review of a limited sample of accounts and they have applied notable judgment over them before determining this count.

Facebook's worldwide daily active users have increased to 9% that is 166 crores in December 2019 when compared to 158 crores in December 2018. They also said that users from India, Indonesia, and the Philippines were key responsible for such growth during December 2019.

Duplicate and fake accounts are very difficult to identify and so it is possible that the estimates can vary significantly. About 5% of accounts on Facebook are estimated to be duplicate accounts.
