Protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act have been ongoing throughout the country since the Bill was passed in the parliament. Chennai Islamists also protested against the act on Friday where chaos happened and the police had beaten up the protesters who had gathered in the Old Washermenpet area.
A few people and few policemen have been injured in this mess. As a result of this, Muslims protested in various parts of Tamilnadu condemning the police beatings. Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan held talks with Islamic organizations at the Washermenpet police station to prevent the situation from escalating.
Following the talks, it was announced that the detainees would be released. But protests against the Citizenship Act is continuing.
Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan met the injured policemen during the protest and consoled them. Speaking to reporters later, he urged the public not to rely on false information being circulated. Meanwhile, former Union Minister and MP Dayanidhi Maran, Congress leader KS Alagiri, Communist Party leader T Pandiyan met the protestors and supported the protesters.
